Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) is a generic name given to systems designed and developed to automatically collect data in a variety of different applications. AIT systems incorporate technologies like contact memory buttons, bar codes, radio frequency (RF) tags, and others, and couple their implementation with custom software to perform a variety of tasks like tracking inventory, locating equipment, and more. Although traditionally used for inventory tracking, AIT can be useful in many other applications. For example, AIT can be used to track maintenance procedures performed on a piece of equipment.
