New EMA-Developed Tool Puts World of Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) Within Easy Reach

LEXINGTON PARK, MD — With the volume of information that organizations must manage and track at an all-time high, paper-based files have become obsolete, and the search is on for practical ways to more easily store, transport, and maintain data. AIT Builder, a new software tool developed by Eagan, McAllister Associates, Inc. (EMA), provides organizations large and small with a low-cost way to explore the capabilities and benefits of one of today's most high-tech solutions: automatic identification technology (AIT) — and specifically contact memory buttons (CMBs).

AIT Builder is a revolutionary proof-of-concept application that offers organizations hands-on experience in the use of CMB technology in their unique work environment - before they invest substantial amounts of time and money in an enterprise-wide custom solution. The system adapts well to maintenance, warehousing, and manufacturing environments, or virtually any organization that manages and maintains large amounts of data. And implementation is as quick and easy as loading the software and creating a table in Microsoft Access.

"Many organizations today are interested in how AIT could work for them, but most aren't ready to take the plunge with a full-scale custom solution without first making sure it's right for their environment," Bill Lewis, Director of EMA's Technology Solutions Division, said. "AIT Builder offers them a cost-effective way to investigate the potential of AIT for their unique efforts and determine whether it actually meets their needs."

Using AIT Builder, data owners build simple databases and, with a probe connected to their desktop, laptop, or handheld computer, read and write records (e.g., maintenance records, product information, etc.) to rugged, battery-free devices called CMBs. CMBs, which are physically attached to machines, weapons, and other items for which data must be maintained, range in size from about 7.5 millimeters to just over an inch in diameter and can hold up to 8 megabytes of data.
